What happens to groups and categories when using ChaosSync for Outlook? Will a 2-way sync mess up Intellect?

Hello Chip,

2 way sync works well. Using ChaosSync for Outlook 2.0.0.3 as a conduit between T&C and my Nokia phone successfully.

In theory, Categories in Outlook maps onto Category in T&C/!ntellect, but nothing gets transferred. There is no mapping of groups because there is no such thing as "group" in Outlook. You could perhaps use some other field, perhaps a user field to do the mapping (ChaosSync allows you to map fields), but I have not tried this.

I'm using ChaosSync for Outlook with Windows 7 (32 bit) and Outlook 2010 Beta. Everything works OK. I added my group designations to my category tab so that both would tranfser to Outlook. Tha way I can filter on both groups and categories in Outlook. This did cause a little extra work. When adding a new contact to Intellect, I had to make sure it went into the correct group and then checked the group and categories in the category tab.

Hello John,

Not sure why my categories are not transferring ? I have in the order of 20 categories in T&C Contacts, and I only see color categories in Outlook (red, blue, green etc). In ChaosSync, have mapped the Categories in Outlook to Category in T&C.

What have I missed ???

I initially had the same problem; only saw the color choices. I contacted Chaos technical support and they said that categories should transfer. I went back to Outlook and deleted all my contacts and then did a "clean" synchronization (Chaos replaces Outlook). All the category information transfered OK. I then added my categories to the master category list letting Outlook select the colors.

I have no idea why the category information was not transferring at the beginning. I must admit that I hadn't looked at the Outlook contact details for the last year or so. I was just using Outlook as a way to troubleshoot problems with Intellect imap email.

Hello John,

Thank you for the hints on transferring categories. Like you, I am not a full time Outlook user. I use it as a "hub", for transfer of T&C info to my Nokia phone, and linking to my corporate calendar.

Have given up on !ntellect as IMAP email client. Corporate email supports Thunderbird with Lighting, Zimbra and Outlook. I will remain with the first 2 IMAP clients for the foreseeable future.

:D Thanks to this thread, I'm making real progress!
I don't know why categories won't sync through Outlook unless you delete the Contacts in Outlook and start totally "clean" -- apparently a "Chaos overwrites Outlook" doesn't do it even though I had the fields mapped.

They all show up in the Category field on the Blackberry also, so that is cool.

Custom Fields is still unresolved. The Blackberry has 4 user defined fields in addition to overlapping with 2 fields that are Custom Fields in my T&C - they are not all coming through and I have to dig in to see if the issue is with ChaosSync or the Blackberry Sync.

I'm still not ready to try a 2-way synch as that was probably responsible for mucking up my Categories and Custom Field labels the last time.

Good to hear...

It will take more testing before you can get confident that 2 way sync works via a conduit like Outlook. For sanity sake, backup your T&C data before embarking on this "thrill seeking" journey. Like any adventure sport, eg. white water rafting, you are liable to fall overboard during the journey, but it is most satisfying when the journey ends & it all works... :)

Did a quick test by mapping T&C Custom Fields 1 to 4 to Outlook User Defined Fields 1 to 4. ChaosSync for Outlook syncs perfectly both ways. So I suspect it could be the Blackberry End ?

My Outlook sync stopped working last week. All I get is a message waiting on Outlook.
Haven't had time to track it down. I contacted Tech support they had no answer. Anyone else have this issue. I assume it was due to a security patch.
