New forum navigation aid

Postby bspeight » Tue Feb 17, 2009 9:09 pm

Forum software guru Dan has added a new feature which will make reading successive threads just that bit easier.

When you are reading a given topic, if you look towards the bottom left-hand corner of the page, you will see a new line:

Previous topic | Next topic

Clicking on either of these does just what it says. Saves having to return to the topic list to navigate to the next or return to the previous topic in the current forum.

I like using the 'view new posts" button myself.

Same here. Do you sometimes see older posts displayed?

Yes, I see the older posts when checking for new posts after a short time period. There must be some time limit which controls this. I use "Mark forums read" on the Index page when this occurs.

One neat trick the BBS software allows is to have the newest posts 'on top', that is the thread reads backwards. I use this more than any of the other board tools and the newest posts are right there when I click into a sub-forum.

It is set in User Control Panel->Board Preferences->Edit Display Options->Post Order Priority and select "Descending". This way for really popular threads (e.g. Battle of the Bulge) I don't have to click several pages to get to the new stuff.

I'm not particularly fond of reading the newest posts first. I prefer to read them in logical order. I guess that's the math major in me (logical).

I suppose this is known by most forum users, but if you click the note icon Image next to the last posters name on a thread (far right column) it takes you to the very latest post!

Actually, my experience has been that a lot of forumers don't know that, so thanks for bringing it up!

I'm with you Judy.

When I start a given forum, I start reading the oldest topics first, and for each topic, I read the oldest posts first.

I didn't say I didn't read them in order, but with 40 posts, I've read 35, the most recent five are on the first page and I read from bottom up. Must be the lawyer in me! Just like Chaos software, we all use it in a different manner -- whatever works!
